I finished taking out the mechanical clicks (this was a manual process, oy) and then turned my efforts to ameliorating the high-pitched hum in the background. Working in Sound Forge, I ended up with a parametric EQ notch of -6.5 db and a bandwidth (or &#8220;Q&#8221;)  of 2.5 at 973 Hz. It&#8217;s really a trial-and-error process for me, but I think the gains outweigh the losses.
